Karen Kay (born Judith Adrienne Pringle, Blackburn, England) was a jazz singer, cabaret singer, comedienne and impressionist. She is the mother of acid jazz singer Jay Kay. Her mother, Ethel Pringle, died when she was small and she was adopted by a family in Preston after a brief spell with the family of her cousin, Margaret Tomlinson. On December 30, 1969 while living in Stertford, Lancashire at the time, she gave birth to her first twin, whom she named Jason, but the twin died. She then gave birth to the second twin, whom she named Jason (Jay Kay) in honour of the first twin who had died. Jason was born Jason Cheetham. Then later Karen, her son Jason and Jason's stepfather Mervyn Kay moved to Manchester. Jason adopted his step-father's last name Kay. Karen had soon got into television work, and later became regular at the Starlight Club, Little Harwood, was tipped as The Face of 1979. She worked alongside Lenny Henry and David Copperfield on a series entitled Six Of A Kind, which eventually hit TV screens as Three Of A Kind - without her. Karen had appeared and acted in Lennie and Jerry (1979), Des O'Connor Tonight (1981), Max Bygraves Side by Side (1982), The Bob Monkhouse Show (1983), Aspel and Company (1985). She had her own tv series "Karen Kay" in 1983. In 1983 her son Jason and step-father Mervyn spent six months in Thailand. Years later Jay Kay formed a band named Jamiroquai. In 2003, Jay Kay met his biological father, Luís Silveira, a man of Portuguese origin. After years on television Karen quietly retired and now lives in London. (via Wikipedia)
